1. MOSQUITO BITS
Your best fight against those annoying Fungas Gnats that always seem to be in your new store bought soil. My preferred way to use this is by sprinkling a dash or so into a container of room temperature water. I then let it steep (like tea) before bottom watering my plants in it. Super effective for getting rid of the larvae!
FYI - I use sticky yellow paper to eliminate the flying adults.
2. NEEM OIL
An organic pest prevention solution I use regularly, on all of my plants. I source mine from Organic Gardening Solutions. Peep my ratio mix on the jar pictured.
3. 5L PRESSURE SPRAYER
(w/ a controlled nozzle)
Once you go big you’ll never use a small sprayer bottle again.
The control you get with the adjustable nozzle, fewer solution refills and the overall ease of use will have you ditching your small sprayers for good! I have 2! One I leave upstairs in my bathroom and one downstairs in my laundry. After I give my plants a good watering (in my shower) I’ll spray them straight after. Once dry I’ll return my plant to its living space. Done.
4. LAZY SUSAN
Not everyone has amazing overhead grow lights for each of their plants and like most we rely on everyday window light to feed our evergreen babes. Lazy Susans have been the best discovery for rotating my plants. I use the 4 or 6 inch for my windowsill plants and the 8 or 9 inch for my large floor planters.
5. SUSTEE
Such a simple water reader that makes knowing when to water your plants a breeze. Save your plants and invest in a few Sustees to make your plant routine clockwork. Curious? Learn more about - Sustee here!
6. BBQ SKEWERS
I always stick a barbecue skewer in with my small cuttings to help train them to grow up or to just direction them a certain way. It has been the best inexpensive yet surprisingly important tool for assisting my juvenile plants with much success.
7. BAMBOO STAKES
I use these for a few things. One way is for staking my fruit trees and for creating a custom trellis. Another as a mixing stick for my plant solutions. Also as a tool, to poke space into damp soil when adding cuttings to a planter.
8. WORM CASTINGS
The best way to fertilise and not burn the roots of your plant. You’ll even discover little worms in your compost which is beneficial for maintaining the health of your potting medium over time. I like to add a top layer of this to my pots when growing season kicks in. I also like to include a cup full when mixing up a fresh batch of my potting medium. 9. SEAWEED FERTILISER
(powdered form)
All the rage is fish fertiliser but having that store bought liquid solution and the smell that comes with it (from what I’m led to believe) is not ideal for a hygiene fan like me. What makes this one a staple in my home is that it is a super concentrated powder that does not have an atomic waft to it even when diluted. I like to add a quarter of a teaspoon to my small watering can filled with water and stir (with my small bamboo stick). It’s such a lovely organic solution to encourage strong roots and as a healthful tonic to aid a plant suffering from any sort of shock (usually transit shock).
10. COFFEE FILTERS OR NETTING
A great addition to my planters. I tend to use the coffee filters for my plastic pots and mainly the plastic netting for my terracotta pots. Basically it just stops the fresh soil from leaching out the bottom of your pot before your soil has a chance to settle in (especially note-worthy when watering).
Bonus - they’re fairly inexpensive.
